When the British film 28 Days Later was released, I wasn't sure I wanted to see yet another snatch and grab zombie flick that was all gore and no plot. However, being me, I went to see the film anyway. Not only was I pleasantly surprised at the quality of the script, I was floored by the characters, plot, structure, art, cinematography, directions, etc. It was a complete package - something that I hadn't expected out of a zombies take over the UK horror flick. Truly, 28 Days Later is a class act.
When 28 Weeks Later was released I was a bit nervous. Could this Hollywood filmed and directed sequel really measure up to its British predecesor? I wasn't sure I wanted to know, but during a recent lull I decided to rent the film. The basic gist of the plot is a husband and wife are separated during the first zombie outbreak. He runs off, leaving her behind because he sees her bitten. Somehow, he manages to live through the attack and ends up in the London rebuilding zone. Trouble ensues when his children return to London only to escape into the city and find their mother who seems to have survived the virus.
The concept that a human could be a carrier of the zombie virus without actually 'turning' is great. There is a lot that could be done with that idea. I also liked the way the military began reintroducing people into Dog Island, London (I think that's the name). I thought all of that was very plausible.
The trouble with 28 Weeks Later comes in the form of plot holes that are filled with sensational action scenes. The wonderful character development, plot integrity, and art direction of the original film went by the wayside in order to turn 28 Weeks Later into a big budget snatch and grab zombie flick.
